Robert Mapplethorpe died today in 1989. His friend Patti Smith, here in a photograph by Mapplethorpe, said of him: “Robert sought not to destroy order, but to reorder, to reinvent, and to create a new order. I know that he always wanted to do something that no one else had done.”
